What Zopent is

Zopent (pantoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor that lowers stomach acid; the 40 mg tablet is used for reflux and inflammation of the food pipe (reflux oesophagitis), stomach and duodenal ulcers, and with antibiotics to clear H. pylori, according to the UK product information for pantoprazole 40 mg gastro-resistant tablets (Amarox). We dispense it on prescription.

  • Zopent 40 mg is DRAP reg. 026021 (DRAP registry entry); the 20 mg tablet is DRAP reg. 039222.
  • Made by Hilton Pharma: Hilton’s own product list gives “ZOPENT | Pantoprazole | 20mg & 40mg Tablets”. It is pantoprazole, not esomeprazole.
  • We found no Hilton leaflet online, so no Pakistani document we could find states its uses or condition of sale. Dispensing it on prescription is our own policy, and the clinical facts on this page come from the UK and US labels for pantoprazole, each named where it is used.
  • See a doctor rather than self-treating if you have unexplained weight loss, repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools or anaemia: the UK label says pantoprazole can mask the symptoms of stomach cancer and delay its diagnosis.
  • DRAP notifies no price for Zopent: every tablet pack is de-controlled, and the price index has no entry.

What is in each tablet

One active ingredient, pantoprazole (as pantoprazole sodium sesquihydrate), in an enteric-coated tablet, from the label claims in DRAP’s registry.

Zopent 40mg (DRAP reg. 026021)Ingredient: Pantoprazole (as sodium sesquihydrate)Amount per tablet: 40 mg
Zopent 20mg (DRAP reg. 039222)Ingredient: Pantoprazole (as sodium sesquihydrate)Amount per tablet: 20 mg

What it is used for

Acid-related stomach and food-pipe problems. The 40 mg and 20 mg strengths have different uses in the UK, and the US label lists fewer.

Uses of pantoprazole, by label
LabelUses
UK, pantoprazole 40 mgReflux oesophagitis, from 12 years; in adults, clearing H. pylori with antibiotics in people with H. pylori ulcers, stomach and duodenal ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions of excess acid.
UK, pantoprazole 20 mgReflux symptoms and long-term prevention of relapse of oesophagitis, from 12 years; in adults, preventing stomach and duodenal ulcers caused by NSAID painkillers in people at risk who need them continuously.
US, ProtonixShort-term healing of erosive oesophagitis, from 5 years; maintaining healing in adults with reflux disease; and long-term treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

How to take it

Swallow the tablet whole, without chewing or crushing it, with some water, 1 hour before a meal, according to the UK product information for pantoprazole 40 mg gastro-resistant tablets (Amarox).

  • The US label for Protonix (Pfizer) says it can be taken with or without food, and that antacids do not affect its absorption.
  • How long: the UK 40 mg label says reflux oesophagitis usually needs 4 weeks, with a further 4 weeks if needed, and a duodenal ulcer generally heals within 2 weeks, or almost always within a further 2.
  • The UK 20 mg label says reflux symptoms generally ease within 2 to 4 weeks, or within a further 4 weeks.
  • Missed dose: the US label says take it as soon as possible, but if the next dose is nearly due, skip the missed one; do not take 2 doses at the same time.

Long-term use: what to watch

The US label for Protonix (Pfizer) says to use the lowest dose and shortest course that suits the condition, and the UK label says people on it for more than a year should be kept under regular review.

  • Broken bones: the UK label says proton pump inhibitors, especially at high doses for more than a year, may modestly increase the risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures, mainly in older people or those with other risk factors.
  • Low magnesium: the UK label says severe low magnesium has rarely been reported after at least three months, usually a year, causing tiredness, muscle spasms, confusion, fits, dizziness or an irregular heartbeat; doctors may check magnesium levels.
  • Vitamin B12: the US label says long daily use, for example more than 3 years, may reduce vitamin B12 absorption.
  • Gut infections: the UK label says it may slightly increase the risk of infections such as Salmonella, Campylobacter and C. difficile; the US label says to consider C. difficile if diarrhoea does not improve.
  • Lupus-like skin rash: the UK label says to seek medical help promptly for skin lesions, especially on sun-exposed skin with joint pain.

Who should not take it, or should ask a doctor first

From the UK product information for pantoprazole 40 mg gastro-resistant tablets (Amarox) unless the US label is named.

  • Must not take it: anyone allergic to pantoprazole or to related medicines (substituted benzimidazoles).
  • Severe liver disease: the label sets a lower daily limit, so take it only as a doctor directs.
  • Children under 12: the UK label does not recommend it, because of limited data.
  • Blood tests for chromogranin A (a tumour marker): the UK label says stop pantoprazole at least 5 days before the test; the US label says at least 14 days.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The UK label advises avoiding it in pregnancy as a precaution; the US label found no link with birth defects in observational studies.

WhoWhat the labels say
PregnancyUK: data from 300 to 1,000 pregnancies show no malformations or harm to the baby, but as a precaution it is preferable to avoid it. US: published observational studies did not show a link with major malformations; animal data suggest possible harm to the baby.
BreastfeedingUK: it passes into breast milk and a risk to the baby can’t be excluded, so weigh breastfeeding against treatment with your doctor. US: detected in breast milk, with no effects seen on the breastfed infant.

Zopent is also registered as a 40 mg injection given into a vein (DRAP registry entry). The UK label for pantoprazole injection, Protium i.v., says it should be given by a healthcare professional under medical supervision.

We don’t sell the injection online: it is given in a clinic or hospital.

Checking your pack is genuine

As of 23 October 2026, a search of DRAP’s website found no alert, recall or rapid alert naming Zopent.

  • Check that the batch number on the carton matches the batch number on the blister inside, and that the pack is sealed.
  • DRAP’s registry lists a pending application, made on 2 September 2024, to add a holographic security coating to the Zopent carton, so the carton design may change. If a pack looks different from your last one, ask our pharmacist before taking it.

We buy only from authorised distributors, and check the batch and expiry on every item before it is packed.

Information as of 23 October 2026. DRAP publishes new alerts on dra.gov.pk.

It is made by Hilton Pharma.

Is Zopent safe for long-term use?

It can be used long term under review. The UK label says people taking it for more than a year should be kept under regular review, and lists risks with long use, such as fractures and low magnesium; it also notes a slightly higher risk of some gut infections. The US label says very long use, for example more than 3 years, may lower vitamin B12, and advises the lowest dose for the shortest time that suits the condition.

The US label says taking antacids at the same time does not affect how pantoprazole is absorbed.

What to Do in Case I Have Missed the Dose?

The US label says take it as soon as possible, but if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and take the next at the usual time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time.

DRAP publishes no definition of this verification flag, so we can’t tell you what it means. We searched DRAP’s website for “Zopent”, “pantoprazole” and “161464” on 23 October 2026 and found no alert naming Zopent or batch 161464; the one pantoprazole result was a 2022 recall of a different company’s brand. When we tested it, the search did not find a word that appears only inside an alert’s attached PDF, so an alert that names a product only in its PDF may not show up. DRAP describes its registered products index as a provisional list that “cannot be used as a reference for any purpose”. Checked against the registry on .
