Daily supplement or treatment dose
These products look alike in a list but are not interchangeable: one 200,000 IU dose holds as much vitamin D as 100 days of a 2,000 IU tablet.
| Strength | What it’s for | How often | Our products |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400 IU oral drops | For: Infants and young children | How often: A daily product. The label or your doctor sets the amount. | Ours: D-Max Oral Drops |
| 2,000 IU | For: Maintenance for adults | How often: A daily product, at the strength your doctor sets | Ours: D-Max Chewable |
| 5,000 IU | For: Higher daily maintenance | How often: A daily product, at the strength your doctor sets | Ours: Nutrifactor Suncell D3, Sunny D 5000 |
| Caution: 10,000 IU | For: A high strength, for when a blood test shows a low level | How often: Only on the schedule your doctor sets. Not for routine daily use. | Ours: Nutrifactor Suncell D3 10000 |
| Caution: 200,000 IU | For: A single treatment dose for diagnosed deficiency, taken only when a doctor says so | How often: One dose. Not a daily supplement. Repeated only if your doctor prescribes it. | Ours: Oslia |
All six contain vitamin D3, also called cholecalciferol. Only the strength and the form differ: oral drops, a chewable tablet, a capsule or a soft gel.
A vitamin D capsule and a vitamin D tablet of the same strength hold the same amount, so the form is about what you find easy to take. Drops suit young children who can’t swallow tablets.
Why a blood test comes first
The right vitamin D dose depends on your blood level, which is why we dispense most of these products on prescription.
Ask your doctor for a 25-OH vitamin D test before starting a high strength. It is a routine blood test, and the result tells your doctor whether you need a daily product or a treatment dose, and at what strength.
After a treatment dose, your doctor may repeat the test to decide what comes next. Without a result, any strength is a guess.
Signs of low vitamin D
Low vitamin D often causes no symptoms at all, but some people notice these.
- Tiredness and fatigue that rest doesn’t fix
- Bone pain, or an ache in the lower back
- Muscle weakness or aching muscles
- Getting ill often
- Low mood
- Hair thinning
Each of these overlaps with many other conditions, so a blood test is the only way to know whether low vitamin D is the cause.
People more likely to run low include those who spend little time in sunlight, cover most of their skin outdoors, have darker skin, which makes less vitamin D from the same sun, or are older.

Taking it properly
Vitamin D is stored in the body, so how you take it matters as much as which product it is.
- Take it with a meal that contains some fat, which helps your body absorb it.
- Keep to the strength and schedule your doctor set, whether that is daily or a weekly dose.
- Chew chewable tablets before swallowing. Swallow soft gels whole with water.
- Measure oral drops with the dropper from the box, not a household spoon.
- Store it away from heat and direct sunlight, out of the reach of children.
- Warning: If you miss a dose, don’t double up. Take the next one as usual, or ask your pharmacist.
- Warning: Tell your doctor about any multivitamin or calcium tablet you take, since many also contain vitamin D.
- Warning: Taking high strengths repeatedly without testing can cause too much calcium in the blood. Feeling sick, very thirsty or confused needs a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Which tablet is best for vitamin D?
There isn’t one best tablet for everyone. The best vitamin D supplement for you is the strength your doctor sets after a blood test, in a form you will actually take: drops, a chewable tablet, a capsule or a soft gel. The same goes for vitamin D tablets for women: the strength depends on your blood level, not on who you are.
What are the signs of low vitamin D?
Common signs include tiredness, bone pain and lower back pain, muscle weakness, getting ill often, low mood and hair thinning. Many people with low levels notice nothing at all. These signs overlap with many other conditions, so a blood test is the only way to know.
Can I take vitamin D without a doctor?
It depends on the strength. Low daily strengths are widely used without a doctor. Anything high strength, such as 10,000 IU or a 200,000 IU dose, needs a blood test first, and we dispense most of them on prescription. The blood test matters even for a high strength we sell without a prescription, because too much vitamin D builds up in the body.
What are vitamin D tablets good for?
Vitamin D helps your body with calcium absorption and is needed for normal bones, teeth and muscles. Your skin makes it in sunlight, so people who spend little time outdoors or cover most of their skin often run low. Tablets raise your level when a blood test shows it is low.
What is the price of vitamin D tablets in Pakistan?
With us, daily-strength vitamin D products cost Rs 556 to Rs 977, depending on strength and pack size. High-strength Nutrifactor Suncell D3 10000 costs Rs 750, and the single 200,000 IU treatment dose, Oslia, costs Rs 425; we dispense it on prescription.
