What Stemetil is
Stemetil (prochlorperazine maleate 5 mg, by Hoechst Pakistan) is used to treat nausea, vomiting and dizziness due to various causes, including migraine, according to Hoechst Pakistan’s own product page. We dispense it on prescription.
- It is a phenothiazine medicine: the UK patient leaflet for Stemetil tablets says it belongs to a group of medicines called phenothiazine antipsychotics, and the NHS calls prochlorperazine an anti-sickness medicine.
- Made by Hoechst Pakistan Limited in Karachi: the company’s own financial statements say it was formerly sanofi-aventis Pakistan Limited and changed its name in September 2023, so packs may still say Sanofi. DRAP’s registry record shows a pending change of the holder’s name from sanofi-aventis Pakistan Limited to Hoechst Pakistan Limited.
- We found no Pakistani leaflet for Stemetil online, so no Pakistani document we could find states its condition of sale. Dispensing it on prescription is our own policy, and the clinical facts on this page come from UK sources, each named where it is used.
- DRAP notifies no price for Stemetil tablets: its price index has no entry for Stemetil or any prochlorperazine product, and DRAP’s registry gives the tablet’s price only as “As per SRO”.
What is in it, with DRAP registration
From the label claim in DRAP’s registry.
| Product | Ingredient | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Stemetil 5mg tablet (DRAP reg. 000824) | Ingredient: Prochlorperazine maleate | Amount: 5 mg (equivalent to 3.08 mg prochlorperazine) |
DRAP registers the tablets in two packs: 3 strips of 10, and 6 strips of 50 (300 tablets). The packs on sale are strips of 50, six to a box.
We found no Stemetil syrup in DRAP’s registry; the only other Stemetil form we found there is an injection (below).
What it is used for
Mainly sickness and dizziness. The UK labels also list psychiatric uses.
| Source | Uses |
|---|---|
| Pakistan, Hoechst (Stemetil) | Nausea, vomiting and dizziness due to various causes, including migraine. |
| UK, Stemetil 5mg tablets | Vertigo due to Ménière’s syndrome, labyrinthitis and other causes; nausea and vomiting from whatever cause, including migraine; also schizophrenia, acute mania, and short-term anxiety alongside other treatment. |

How to take it
The dose depends on what it is being used for, according to the UK product information for Stemetil 5mg tablets, which gives different regimens for preventing sickness, treating it, vertigo, anxiety and schizophrenia. The choice belongs to your prescriber; take it as they direct.
- Children: the UK product information says Stemetil is not recommended for children weighing less than 10 kg or below 1 year of age, and children’s doses depend on body weight.
- Older people: the UK product information recommends a lower dose in the elderly, and says to use it with caution, particularly in very hot or very cold weather.
- Storage: DRAP’s record says store below 30°C and protect from light.
Is Stemetil a sleeping pill?
No: it is an anti-sickness medicine that can make you drowsy.
- None of the sources on this page lists sleep problems or insomnia as a use of Stemetil; Hoechst Pakistan’s product page lists it under antiemetics.
- Drowsiness is a side effect: the NHS says common side effects include feeling sleepy and a dry mouth, and the UK product information says patients should be warned about drowsiness during the early days of treatment.
- The UK patient leaflet lists medicines to help you sleep (sedatives, barbiturates) among the medicines to tell your doctor about, and the UK product information says the effects of alcohol, barbiturates and other sedatives on the brain may be intensified.
Side effects
Common side effects include feeling sleepy and a dry mouth, according to the NHS.
| Source | Side effects |
|---|---|
| NHS (common) | Feeling sleepy; a dry mouth; blurred vision; headaches; a stuffy nose. |
| UK product information (movement) | Sudden muscle spasms and abnormal movements (acute dystonia), including rolling of the eyes, more common in children and young adults and usually in the first 4 days or after a dose increase; Parkinson-like symptoms, more common in adults and the elderly; and tardive dyskinesia, usually after prolonged or high dosage, which can even occur after treatment has stopped. |
| UK product information (serious) | Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, so treatment must be stopped in the event of unexplained fever; QT prolongation and serious, potentially fatal heart rhythm problems; a fall in white blood cells. |
The UK patient leaflet says to avoid exposure to direct sunlight while taking this medicine.
Who should not take it, or should ask a doctor first
The UK product information for Stemetil 5mg tablets lists who must not take it, and who should avoid it.
| Who | What the UK product information says |
|---|---|

Alcohol and other medicines
Tell your doctor about everything you take.
| What | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol, sleeping medicines and other sedatives | What the source says: Their effect on the brain may be intensified, and breathing may slow (respiratory depression). | Source: UK, 4.5 |
| Medicines that affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation) | What the source says: Phenothiazines may add to QT prolongation and the risk of serious heart rhythm problems. | Source: UK, 4.4 |

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
The UK label and the NHS disagree, so both are shown. Ask your doctor before taking it.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | UK patient leaflet: do not take it if you are pregnant, think you may be, or are planning a baby. UK product information: it should be avoided in pregnancy unless the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. NHS: prochlorperazine can be taken in pregnancy, and there’s no evidence it will harm your baby. |
| Breastfeeding | UK product information: phenothiazines may pass into milk, so breastfeeding should be suspended during treatment. NHS: if your doctor, health visitor or midwife says your baby is healthy, you can usually take it while breastfeeding. |
Stemetil injection
DRAP’s registry also lists “STEMATIL INJECTION”, 12.5 mg of prochlorperazine as mesylate (the record spells the ingredient “Prochlorpromazine”), in packs of 10 × 1 ml (DRAP registry entry).
We don’t sell the injection online: it is given in a clinic or hospital.
Checking your pack is genuine
As of 28 October 2026, a search of DRAP’s website found no alert, recall or rapid alert naming Stemetil or prochlorperazine.
- Check that the batch number on the carton matches the one on the strip, and that the pack is sealed.
- DRAP registers the tablets in 3 strips of 10 and 6 strips of 50. DRAP also registers a different brand with a similar name, Semetil, so check the name on the pack.
- If anything looks wrong, do not take it. Send us a photo of the carton and strip on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.
We buy only from authorised distributors, and check the batch and expiry on every item before it is packed.
Information as of 28 October 2026. DRAP publishes new alerts on dra.gov.pk.
Returns and replacements
Medicines and supplements can’t be returned once they have left our pharmacy.
- Returned medicine can never go back into saleable stock. That is a safety rule, not a commercial one.
- If an item arrives damaged or wrong, tell us on WhatsApp within 24 hours and we replace it. That is us fixing our mistake, not a return.
- Anything that arrives expired or within a month of expiry we replace or refund, your choice, with no time limit.
