What Ulsanic is

Ulsanic (sucralfate, as 500 mg or 1 g tablets or a 1 g in 5 ml suspension) forms a protective coating over ulcers and is used for benign stomach and duodenal ulcers, chronic gastritis and the prevention of stress ulcers, according to Highnoon’s Pakistani leaflet for Ulsanic. The leaflet says it is to be sold on prescription only, so we dispense it on prescription.

  • Ulsanic 500 mg is DRAP reg. 005485 (DRAP registry entry); the 1 g tablet is DRAP reg. 008246 and the suspension DRAP reg. 010927.
  • Made in Lahore by Highnoon Laboratories, which the leaflet says is under licence from Chugai Pharmaceutical of Japan.
  • Prescription: the leaflet says “To be sold and used on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner only.”, and its Urdu says the same: “صرف مستند ڈاکٹر کے نسخہ کے مطابق ہی دوا فروخت اور استعمال کی جائے۔”
  • Only by mouth, never by injection: the leaflet says fatal complications, including blockages of blood vessels in the lungs and brain (emboli), have occurred when sucralfate was given intravenously.
  • Kidney failure or dialysis: sucralfate contains aluminium, which builds up when the kidneys can’t clear it. See the cautions below before you order.
  • DRAP notifies no price for Ulsanic: every pack is de-controlled, and the price index has no entry.

What is in each tablet and in the suspension

One active ingredient, sucralfate (aluminium sucrose sulphate), from the label claims in DRAP’s registry.

DRAP also lists a second Ulsanic Suspension at 500 mg in 5 ml (DRAP reg. 032072, registry entry). Highnoon doesn’t list it, and we sell the 1 g in 5 ml suspension only.

What it is used for

Stomach and duodenal ulcers. Highnoon’s leaflet, its website and the UK and US labels list slightly different uses.

Uses of sucralfate, by source
SourceUses
Pakistan, Highnoon’s leafletBenign gastric ulcer; benign duodenal ulcer; chronic gastritis; prevention of stress ulcers, including in children in intensive care.
Pakistan, Highnoon’s product listingGastric and duodenal ulcer; prevention of their relapse; reflux oesophagitis; stress ulcer prevention.
UK, sucralfate 1 g tabletsIn adults and adolescents over 14: duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, chronic gastritis, reflux oesophagitis and the prevention of stress ulcers in seriously ill patients.
US, Carafate tabletsShort-term treatment, up to 8 weeks, of active duodenal ulcer, and maintenance treatment at a lower dose after the ulcer heals.

The leaflet says sucralfate acts locally, forming a complex that covers the ulcer and protects it from acid, pepsin and bile salts; only small amounts are absorbed.

How to take it

On an empty stomach, according to Highnoon’s Pakistani leaflet for Ulsanic; your doctor decides how much.

  • For ulcers and chronic gastritis in adults, the leaflet gives it either twice a day, on rising and at bedtime, or four times a day, 1 hour before meals and at bedtime, for 4 to 6 weeks, or up to 12 weeks in resistant cases.
  • The leaflet says healing may happen in the first week or two, but treatment should continue for 4 to 8 weeks unless an x-ray or endoscopy has shown the ulcer has healed.
  • Antacids: the leaflet says they may be used for pain, but not within half an hour before or after Ulsanic.
  • Suspension: the UK label for sucralfate suspension says to shake it before use.
  • Children: the leaflet gives doses for children but also says safety and effectiveness in children have not been established, and the UK label does not recommend it under 14. Only give it to a child on a doctor’s advice.

Who should not take it, or should ask a doctor first

From Highnoon’s Pakistani leaflet for Ulsanic unless another label is named.

  • Must not take it: anyone allergic to sucralfate or any ingredient.
  • Chronic kidney failure or dialysis: the leaflet says to use it with caution, because aluminium can build up and cause bone and brain problems. The UK product information for sucralfate 1 g tablets (Penlan) is stricter: not recommended on dialysis, and in severe kidney disease only short term, with extreme caution.
  • Diabetes: the leaflet says episodes of high blood sugar have been reported in diabetic patients, recommends close monitoring, and says diabetes treatment may need adjusting.
  • Other aluminium-containing medicines, such as some antacids: the leaflet says they add to the body’s aluminium load.
  • Trouble swallowing: the UK tablet label says the tablets may be inhaled into the airway by people with swallowing difficulty.
  • Seriously ill patients and tube feeding: the UK label says bezoars (solid masses in the stomach) have been reported, mainly in intensive care patients with slow stomach emptying or on tube feeds.

Other medicines

Sucralfate can bind other medicines in the gut and reduce how much is absorbed, so timing matters.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The leaflet says there are no adequate studies in pregnant women, so it should be used in pregnancy only if clearly needed, and that caution should be used when breastfeeding, as it isn’t known whether it passes into breast milk.

Side effects

Constipation is the most common: in studies of over 2,700 people taking sucralfate tablets, side effects were reported in 4.7%, and constipation in 2% (US label).

DRAP publishes no definition of this verification flag, so we can’t tell you what it means. We searched DRAP’s website for “Ulsanic” and “sucralfate” on 23 October 2026 and found no alert naming Ulsanic; the one sucralfate result was a rapid alert on a different brand’s suspension. When we tested it, the search did not find a word that appears only inside an alert’s attached PDF, so an alert that names a product only in its PDF may not show up. DRAP describes its registered products index as a provisional list that “cannot be used as a reference for any purpose”. Checked against the registry on .
