How to use a pregnancy test strip
Follow the steps in order and time them; most wrong results come from reading too late or testing too early.
- Check the expiry date and that the foil pouch is sealed. Open it only when you are ready to test.
- Collect a first morning sample of urine in a clean, dry cup.
- Hold the strip by the top and dip it, arrows pointing down, no further than the marked line.
- Keep it there for the time the leaflet in your pack states, then take it out.
- Lay it flat on a clean, dry surface.
- Read it within the result window the leaflet in your pack states. The US FDA says a home test “usually takes only about 5 minutes”.
- Don’t read it after the window ends. Evaporation lines can appear later and look like a second line.
With a midstream test, hold the absorbent tip in your urine stream for the time on the leaflet instead of dipping it, then lay it flat and read it the same way. If you would like the steps explained in Urdu, message us on WhatsApp.
Reading your result
Read the result inside the result window and match what you see to one row below.
| What you see | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Two clear lines: the control line and the test line | Means: The test has detected hCG. The result is positive. | Next: Confirm with a doctor. |
| One line only, at the control line | Means: The test has not detected hCG. The result is negative. | Next: If your period doesn’t arrive, test again in a few days. The NHS: “wait a few days and try again”, and speak to a doctor if a second test is negative and your period still hasn’t come. |
| A faint second line, within the result window | Means: A faint line usually still means a positive result: hCG was detected at a low level. | Next: Confirm with a doctor, or test again with a first morning sample in a few days. |
| No lines at all, or no control line | Means: The test is invalid. It didn’t work, whatever else it shows. | Next: Repeat the test with a new strip. |
A line that appears after the result window has ended doesn’t count. If you aren’t sure what you are looking at, test again with a new strip and a first morning sample.
How soon can you test
These tests look for hCG, a hormone that rises in early pregnancy, so timing affects the accuracy.
- From the first day of a missed period, these tests are very reliable.
- Warning: Before that, hCG can still be too low to detect, so a negative result may be a false negative.
- If you test early, get a negative result and your period doesn’t arrive, test again after a few days (the NHS: “wait a few days and try again”).
- If your cycle is irregular, count from the longest cycle you usually have.
- Warning: If your period still hasn’t come after a second negative test, see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions
How to confirm pregnancy by strip?
Dip the strip in a first morning urine sample up to the marked line, lay it flat and read it within the time on the leaflet. Two lines, the control line and the test line, mean the test has detected hCG, the pregnancy hormone. A home test is a first step: confirm the result with a doctor, who can arrange a blood test or an examination.
How soon can a pregnancy strip detect pregnancy?
These tests are very reliable from the first day of a missed period. Before that, hCG may still be too low to detect, so a negative result is less reliable. If you test early, get a negative result and your period still doesn’t arrive, test again after a few days: the NHS says “wait a few days and try again”, and to see your doctor if a second test is negative and your period has not arrived.
Are pregnancy test strips 100% sure?
No home test is 100% sure. Used correctly from the day of a missed period, they are very reliable. The most common problem is testing too early, which can give a false negative. Some fertility medicines that contain hCG can also affect the result. Whatever the result, confirm it with a doctor if you are unsure.
What is the price of pregnancy test strips in Pakistan?
Pregnancy test strips cost Rs 40 to Rs 80 with us, and a midstream pregnancy test kit costs Rs 275. Strips cost less because you collect the sample in a cup yourself.
What time of day is best to take a pregnancy test?
The US FDA says using your first morning urine can improve your chances of an accurate result. The NHS says a sample from any time of day will do. If you test later in the day, try not to drink a lot beforehand: Cleveland Clinic says drinking excessive amounts of fluid can dilute the hormone the test looks for.
