Which nebulizer should you buy

Most people need a compressor nebulizer machine for home use; a portable one makes sense for travel or a child who needs regular treatment.

Which type of nebulizer suits whom
TypeBest forWhat to knowOur pick
CompressorBest for: Home use. The most common type. What to know: Mains powered and a little louder. Works with most prescribed solutions and is cheap to run.Our pick: Certeza NB‑608 to start; Omron NE‑C101 or Beurer IH18 for a branded model
Portable meshBest for: Travel, and nebulizer treatment for kids who won’t sit by a noisy machine. What to know: Quiet and small, on batteries or rechargeable. Costs more, and the mesh needs careful cleaning. Our pick: We don’t stock a mesh model yet. Ask us on WhatsApp.

Choose by who will use it. An adult can use a mouthpiece or an adult mask, and a child needs a child mask that fits snugly. If both will use it, pick a model with both masks in the box. The price table shows what each one includes.

Ultrasonic models are a third type, but some medicines aren’t suitable for them, so check with your doctor first. European packs often use the British spelling, nebuliser: it’s the same device.

What you need besides the machine

A nebulizer doesn’t come with medicine: we sell the machine without asking for a prescription, but the solution that goes in it is prescribed by your doctor.

  • The machine, with its medication cup, which holds the solution during a treatment.
  • An adult mask or a child mask that covers the nose and mouth without gaps.
  • Or a mouthpiece, for adults and older children who can keep their lips sealed around it.
  • Tubing, which carries air from the machine to the cup. A spare length is useful.
  • Warning: The nebulising solution your doctor prescribed. It is not in the box.

We can supply the prescribed solution too. Send a photo of the prescription on WhatsApp and our pharmacist will check it before it is dispensed.

Cleaning and looking after it

Cleaning after every use stops germs growing in the parts you breathe through and keeps the machine working.

  1. After each use, empty the medication cup and rinse the cup and mask or mouthpiece in warm water. Don’t wash the tubing.
  2. Shake off the water and let the parts air dry on a clean towel before you put them away.
  3. Once a week, give the parts a deeper clean in warm soapy water, or disinfect them as the manual says, then rinse and dry.
  4. Wipe the compressor unit with a damp cloth. Never immerse it in water or hold it under a tap.
  5. Check the air filter and change it when it turns grey, or as often as the manual recommends.
  6. Replace the tubing, masks and cup as the manual recommends, or sooner if they crack, cloud or stiffen.

Using a nebulizer safely

The machine is simple to use, but the medicine in it is prescribed, so follow these every time.

  • Wash your hands before you fill the medication cup.
  • Sit upright, holding the cup level so the solution doesn’t spill.
  • Breathe normally through your mouth until the mist stops.
  • Stay with a child for the whole treatment. A small child can sit on your lap.
  • Warning: Use only the medicine and dose your doctor prescribed. Don’t change either without asking them.
  • Warning: Never share a mask, mouthpiece or medication cup between people.
  • Warning: Never put water, oils or cough syrup in the cup.
  • Warning: If breathlessness gets worse during or after a treatment, get urgent medical help. Don’t take another dose instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of a nebulizer?

A nebulizer turns liquid medicine into a fine mist that you breathe in through a mask or mouthpiece. It is used for breathing treatment in asthma, COPD and other chest conditions, and suits young children, older adults and anyone who finds an inhaler hard to use.

What liquid do you put in a nebulizer?

Only the nebulising solution your doctor prescribed, measured exactly as the prescription says. If your doctor asks you to dilute it, use sterile saline as directed. Never put tap water, oils or cough syrup in the medication cup.

Is a nebulizer good for the lungs?

A nebulizer is a way of delivering medicine, not a treatment in itself. It gets the medicine your doctor prescribed into your airways as a mist. Any benefit to your lungs comes from that medicine and the condition it is prescribed for.

Can a nebulizer help with a cough?

Only when the cough comes from a condition your doctor treats with nebulised medicine, such as asthma, COPD, or bronchitis with wheezing. Most coughs and chest congestion from a cold don’t need one. See a doctor to find the cause before buying a machine for a cough.

How much does a nebulizer machine cost in Pakistan?

Our nebulizer machines cost Rs 5,000 to Rs 13,500. Entry compressor models are Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,500, and branded models from Laica, Beurer and Omron are Rs 8,450 to Rs 13,500. The prescribed solution is bought separately.
