What Mucaine is
- Why the anaesthetic: Pfizer India’s label for Mucaine says oxethazaine is a local anaesthetic that keeps working even in stomach acid, carried in an aluminium and magnesium hydroxide antacid.
- Made by Lucky Core Industries in Karachi, formerly ICI Pakistan: DRAP’s registry record approved the change of name in February 2023, so older bottles may still say ICI Pakistan.
- We found no Pakistani leaflet for Mucaine online, so no Pakistani document we could find states its condition of sale. We sell it without a prescription; the clinical facts on this page come from Pfizer India’s label for the same strength and the NHS, each named where it is used.
- DRAP notifies no price for Mucaine: its price index has no Mucaine entry, and DRAP’s registry lists its packs as de-controlled.

DRAP registers Mucaine suspension in 120 ml and 150 ml bottles, and a 30 ml bottle given free of cost; Lucky Core’s product list shows the 150 ml.
What it is used for
Acid-related pain in the stomach and food pipe.
| Source | Uses |
|---|---|
| Pakistan, Lucky Core (pack) | Rapid relief of gastric pain and heartburn. |
| India, Pfizer (Mucaine) | Rapid and effective relief in gastritis, oesophagitis, hiatus hernia, heartburn of pregnancy, and peptic ulcer. |
How to take it
Mucaine is taken before meals, unlike most antacids: Pfizer India’s label for Mucaine gives one regimen, four times a day, 15 minutes before each meal and at bedtime. Follow the pack or your doctor.
- The NHS says that for most people the best time to take antacids is with or soon after meals and just before bed; Mucaine’s label says before meals instead, so follow the Mucaine timing.
- Spacing: the Mucaine label says 1 to 2 hours from other medicines by mouth; the NHS says 2 to 4 hours for antacids in general.
- Children: the Mucaine label says doses for young children have not been extensively evaluated, and a proper diagnosis should come before giving a child an antacid.
- Shake well before use, and do not exceed the recommended dose, according to the Mucaine label. DRAP’s record gives the storage condition as 25°C.
Side effects
| Ingredient | Side effects |
|---|---|
| Oxethazaine | If held in the mouth for a long time, it may numb the tongue and affect taste; dizziness, faintness and drowsiness have occasionally occurred, especially above the recommended dose. |
| Aluminium hydroxide | May cause constipation. |
| Magnesium hydroxide | May cause diarrhoea. |
Who should not take it, or should ask first
Each line names its source.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Allergy to any ingredient | Mucaine label: must not be taken. |
| Long-term kidney problems | Mucaine label: care is needed, because aluminium can build up in chronic kidney failure, with effects on the bones, brain and blood. |
| Liver disease, kidney disease or heart failure | NHS: some antacids may not be safe; get advice first. |
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Ask your doctor before taking it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | Mucaine label: there are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women, so use in pregnancy should be based on weighing the risks and benefits. It lists heartburn of pregnancy among its uses. |
| Pregnancy and breastfeeding (antacids generally) | NHS: most antacids are considered safe while pregnant or breastfeeding, but always get advice first. |
Checking your pack is genuine
DRAP has declared Mucaine Suspension from batch 257A088 spurious, and says the sample does not contain the active ingredients. If your bottle’s batch number is 257A088, do not use it.
- Check the batch number printed on the bottle and carton, and that the seal is intact.
- DRAP’s registry records the change of name from ICI Pakistan to Lucky Core Industries in February 2023, so older stock may say ICI Pakistan. If a pack looks different from your last one, ask our pharmacist before using it.
- If anything looks wrong, do not use it. Send us a photo of the bottle and carton on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.

Frequently asked questions
What is Mucaine syrup used for?
Mucaine combines oxethazaine, a local anaesthetic, with aluminium and magnesium hydroxide antacids. Lucky Core’s pack says it gives rapid relief of gastric pain and heartburn, and Pfizer India’s label lists gastritis, oesophagitis, hiatus hernia, heartburn of pregnancy and peptic ulcer.
Should Mucaine be taken before or after food?
Before. Pfizer India’s Mucaine label says take it 15 minutes before each meal and at bedtime, preferably undiluted, although a sip of water may be taken.
Is Mucaine the same as Gaviscon?
No. Both relieve heartburn, but they work differently: Pfizer India’s Mucaine label calls oxethazaine a local anaesthetic, carried in an aluminium and magnesium hydroxide antacid, while the NHS says Gaviscon forms a protective layer on top of the stomach contents. Ask our pharmacist which suits your symptoms.
What are the side effects of Mucaine?
Pfizer India’s label says the aluminium may cause constipation and the magnesium may cause diarrhoea, and that oxethazaine may numb the tongue if held in the mouth, and occasionally cause dizziness or drowsiness, especially above the recommended dose.
Can I take Mucaine in pregnancy?
Only after advice. Pfizer India’s label says use in pregnancy should be based on weighing the risks and benefits, although it lists heartburn of pregnancy among its uses.
What is the price of Mucaine in Pakistan?
DRAP notifies no maximum price for Mucaine: its price index has no Mucaine entry, and its registry lists the packs as de-controlled. Our price for the 150 ml bottle is shown above.

DRAP registration
- Mucaine Suspension (000086), Lucky Core Industries Limited. DRAP’s registry shows: Provisionally Active, “Not Verified”.
DRAP publishes no definition of this verification flag, so we can’t tell you what it means. We searched DRAP’s website for “Mucaine” and “oxethazaine” on 30 October 2026 and found one alert naming spurious Mucaine Suspension, batch 257A088 (below). When we tested it, the search did not find a word that appears only inside an alert’s attached PDF, so an alert that names a product only in its PDF may not show up. DRAP describes its registered products index as a provisional list that “cannot be used as a reference for any purpose”. Checked against the registry on .
