What Gaviscon is
- How it works: the NHS says Gaviscon forms a protective layer on top of the contents of your stomach, which helps stop stomach acid moving up into your food pipe, and that one dose should last for around 4 hours.
- The Pakistani Gaviscon Liquid is not the same formula as the UK’s Gaviscon Original: its label lists sodium alginate and sodium bicarbonate, with no calcium carbonate, while the UK product information lists calcium carbonate too.
- We found no Pakistani leaflet for Gaviscon, so no Pakistani document we could find states its condition of sale. We sell it without a prescription; safety facts the Pakistani labels don’t cover come from UK sources, each named where it is used.
- DRAP’s price index has no Gaviscon entry, and DRAP’s registry marks each Gaviscon price as de-controlled.

DRAP’s record for Gaviscon Liquid names no active ingredient, so its amounts come from the Pakistani bottle label; the Advance Liquid’s amounts are in DRAP’s record and on its label.

How to take it
The Pakistani labels say take it after meals and at bedtime, with the amount set by age; follow the label or your doctor.
- Children: the Pakistani Gaviscon Liquid label gives an amount for children aged 6 to 12, and says children aged 2 to 6 should be given it on medical advice only. The Advance label says children under 12 should be given it on medical advice only. The UK product information says the same for all children under 12.
- Shake well before use, store below 30°C, and do not keep it in the refrigerator, according to the Pakistani labels.
- See a doctor if it isn’t helping: the NHS says if you buy Gaviscon without a prescription, do not take it for longer than 7 days without checking with a doctor.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and babies
The Pakistani labels don’t cover pregnancy, so the UK sources are shown.

The NHS says most people who take Gaviscon do not have any side effects.

Checking your pack is genuine
As of 30 October 2026, a search of DRAP’s website found no alert, recall or rapid alert naming Gaviscon.
- Gaviscon in Pakistan comes in a 120 ml amber glass bottle; check that the seal is intact and that the batch and expiry are printed on the label.
- The Gaviscon liquids we found in DRAP’s registry are each registered in a 120 ml bottle, and the search found no Gaviscon Infant. If a pack looks different from your last one, ask our pharmacist before using it.
- If anything looks wrong, do not use it. Send us a photo of the bottle on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.

Returns and replacements
Medicines and supplements can’t be returned once they have left our pharmacy.
- Returned medicine can never go back into saleable stock. That is a safety rule, not a commercial one.
- If an item arrives damaged or wrong, tell us on WhatsApp within 24 hours and we replace it. That is us fixing our mistake, not a return.
- Anything that arrives expired or within a month of expiry we replace or refund, your choice, with no time limit.

The Pakistani labels list sodium alginate 500 mg with sodium bicarbonate 267 mg in each 10 ml of Gaviscon Liquid, and sodium alginate 1000 mg with potassium bicarbonate 200 mg in each 10 ml of Gaviscon Advance.
How long should I wait between Gaviscon and other medicines?
Two hours. The UK patient leaflet says do not take Gaviscon within two hours of other medicines by mouth, because it can interfere with how some of them work.
What is the price of Gaviscon in Pakistan?
DRAP’s price index has no Gaviscon entry, and DRAP’s registry lists Gaviscon’s prices as de-controlled. Our Advance price is shown above, and we confirm the Gaviscon Liquid price on WhatsApp.
Which is better, Gaviscon or Mucaine?
They work differently. The NHS says Gaviscon forms a protective layer on the stomach contents, while DRAP’s registry lists Mucaine as oxethazaine with aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, and Pfizer India’s Mucaine label describes oxethazaine as a local anaesthetic. Which suits you depends on your symptoms; ask our pharmacist.
