What is in each tablet
One active ingredient, from the label claim in DRAP’s registry: “Each tablet contains: Ivermectin 6mg”.
| Active ingredient | Per tablet |
|---|---|
| Ivermectin | 6 mg |
What ivermectin is approved for
Parasitic infections, and, as a skin cream, rosacea. Which ones depends on the regulator, and scabies is approved in some countries but not in the US.
| Source | What it lists |
|---|---|
| US FDA label for Stromectol (Merck), revised 09/2024 | Tablets: strongyloidiasis of the intestinal tract (a roundworm infection, Strongyloides stercoralis) and onchocerciasis (river blindness, Onchocerca volvulus). The label says it has no activity against adult Onchocerca worms. It does not list scabies or head lice. |
| US FDA, skin products | Not tablets: an ivermectin 0.5% lotion for head lice (Sklice, now sold over the counter in the US) and a 1% cream for inflammatory lesions of rosacea (Soolantra). |
| European Medicines Agency | “In the EU, ivermectin tablets are approved for treating some parasitic worm infestations while ivermectin skin preparations are approved for treating skin conditions such as rosacea.” |
| France (Stromectol 3 mg) | Gastrointestinal strongyloidiasis; microfilaraemia in lymphatic filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti; and human sarcoptic scabies, when the diagnosis is made by clinical examination and/or parasitological testing. Treating itching as a trial, without a diagnosis, is not justified. |
| UK (Ivermectin 3mg tablets, Exeltis) | Strongyloidiasis, microfilaraemia in lymphatic filariasis, and human sarcoptic scabies. |
| WHO Model List of Essential Medicines | Listed as an essential medicine (not a regulator’s approval) for strongyloidiasis and other intestinal worms, onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, and scabies. |
Scabies in the US: “Oral ivermectin is not FDA approved for the treatment of scabies” (CDC, clinical care of scabies). The FDA says that, “with few exceptions”, doctors may prescribe an approved medicine for an unapproved use when they judge it medically appropriate for a patient.
The US label is for 3 mg tablets. The 6 mg Stromectol tablet is discontinued in the US; Drugs@FDA records that it was not withdrawn for safety or effectiveness reasons.
DRAP’s ivermectin recalls are veterinary injections
Every DRAP recall alert about ivermectin that a search of DRAP’s site finds (16 October 2026: more than ten) concerns a veterinary injection made by another company. None concerns Ivermite or any ivermectin tablet for people. Three examples:
| DRAP alert | Products | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| I/S/10-25-84, 9 October 2025 | Products: Veterinary injections, including six ivermectin products: Micrise-2%, Ivozon 2%, IVERMEC 1%, Selmec, Ivomek 2% and Ivergen, from six manufacturers. | Finding: Each declared substandard, on different tests: Micrise-2% on assay and chromatographic purity; Ivozon 2%, Selmec and Ivergen on assay and related substances; IVERMEC 1% on chromatographic purity; Ivomek 2% on assay and chromatographic purity, and also declared misbranded. |
| I/S/11-25-111, 18 November 2025 | Products: Veterinary ivermectin injections Micrise-1%, Ivotek and Ivergen. | Finding: Substandard: failed assay and purity tests, “indicating possible under-potency, over-potency, or presence of harmful impurities.” |
| I/S/03-26-24, 14 April 2026 | Products: Veterinary ivermectin injection MAC ROLD 1%. | Finding: Declared misbranded and substandard on assay and related-substances tests. |
The alert numbers are taken from the alert documents themselves (I/S/11-25-111, I/S/03-26-24). DRAP’s web listing of those alerts shows different numbers for these two, I/S/10-25-111 and I/S/04-26-24; we follow the documents, which the listing indexes.
Dunya News, 17 February 2026, reported a Punjab Health Department alert on “Cetirizine 10mg tablets and Ivermectin injections”, naming no brand. Ivermite is a tablet, not an injection.
Never take an ivermectin product made for animals
The US FDA: “Never use medications intended for animals on yourself or other people.” (Ivermectin and COVID-19)
- Warning: “Animal ivermectin products are different formulations than those approved for humans. Due to the lack of testing of these formulations in humans, the safety of these products in humans is not known.” (US FDA)
- Warning: “The FDA has received multiple reports of patients who have required medical attention, including hospitalization, after self-medicating with ivermectin intended for animals.” (US FDA)
- Warning: An ivermectin overdose “can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension (low blood pressure), allergic reactions (itching and hives), dizziness, ataxia (problems with balance), seizures, coma and even death.” (US FDA)
- People exposed to veterinary ivermectin, by mouth, breathing it in, injection or on the skin, most often reported rash, swelling, headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea; seizures and problems with balance and breathing were also reported (US FDA label for Stromectol (Merck), revised 09/2024, overdosage).
Tell your doctor first
What the US FDA label for Stromectol (Merck), revised 09/2024 says needs care.
- Warning: Do not take it if you are allergic to any ingredient (the label’s only contraindication).
- Warning: If you may have loiasis (Loa loa infection): people with onchocerciasis who are also heavily infected with Loa loa may rarely develop a serious or fatal brain disorder (encephalopathy). The label calls for assessment for loiasis before treatment in anyone who has had significant exposure to areas of West or Central Africa where Loa loa is found.
- Warning: Nervous system effects, including drowsiness, confusion, disorientation, stupor, coma and death, have been reported, including in people without onchocerciasis.
- People with onchocerciasis can have skin, joint, lymph node and fever reactions as the parasites die (the Mazzotti reaction), and eye reactions too.
- A weakened immune system, including HIV: strongyloidiasis may need repeated courses, and cure may not be achievable.
- Older people: treatment should be cautious, because of more frequent liver, kidney or heart problems and other medicines.
Other medicines
The US label lists one drug interaction.
| Medicine | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Warfarin (a blood thinner) | What happens: Rare post-marketing reports of increased INR, a measure of how long blood takes to clot. | Source: US FDA label for Stromectol (Merck), revised 09/2024 |
| Other medicines | What happens: “Even doses of ivermectin for approved human uses can interact with other medications, like blood-thinners.” | Source: US FDA, Ivermectin and COVID-19 |
The label also says ivermectin is mainly broken down in the liver by the enzyme CYP3A4. Tell your doctor everything you take.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children
Not in pregnancy, according to the US label.
| Who | What the US FDA label for Stromectol (Merck), revised 09/2024 says |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | “Ivermectin should not be used during pregnancy since safety in pregnancy has not been established.” |
| Breastfeeding | It passes into breast milk in low concentrations. Treating a breastfeeding mother should only happen when the risk of delaying her treatment outweighs the possible risk to the baby. |
| Children | Safety and effectiveness in children weighing less than 15 kg have not been established. |
Side effects
From the US FDA label for Stromectol (Merck), revised 09/2024. In its four strongyloidiasis studies, with 109 patients in total, no side effect affected more than 3%.
| Treated for | Side effects reported |
|---|---|
| Strongyloidiasis | Dizziness and itching (2.8% each); diarrhoea and nausea (1.8% each); tiredness, stomach pain, loss of appetite, constipation, vomiting, sleepiness, vertigo, tremor, rash and hives (0.9% each). Blood tests, seen “regardless of drug relationship”: raised liver enzymes (2%), lower white cell count (3%). |
| Onchocerciasis | Mostly reactions to the dying parasites: itching (27.5%), skin swelling or rash (22.7%), fever (22.6%), swollen tender lymph nodes, and joint pain (9.3%). Also fast heartbeat (3.5%), swollen ankles or legs (3.2%), facial swelling (1.2%), and low blood pressure on standing (1.1%). |
| Reported after approval, any use | Low blood pressure, mainly on standing; asthma getting worse; severe skin reactions (toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome); seizures; hepatitis and raised liver enzymes and bilirubin; and nervous system effects up to coma and death. |

Frequently asked questions
What is the use of an Ivermite tablet?
Ivermite contains ivermectin, an antiparasitic medicine. The US FDA label for Stromectol (revised 09/2024) lists two infections: strongyloidiasis of the intestinal tract and onchocerciasis (river blindness). French and UK labels for ivermectin tablets also list scabies and lymphatic filariasis. Ivermectin is not a treatment for COVID-19, and we do not sell it for that.
What is ivermectin used for?
Parasitic infections, and, as a skin cream, rosacea. The US FDA approves ivermectin tablets for intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis, and ivermectin skin products for head lice and rosacea. The European Medicines Agency says ivermectin tablets are approved in the EU for some parasitic worm infestations. Oral ivermectin is licensed for scabies in France and the UK, but not in the US.
What is 6 mg of ivermectin used for?
6 mg is the amount of ivermectin in one Ivermite tablet; the uses are those of ivermectin tablets, such as intestinal strongyloidiasis, onchocerciasis and, in France and the UK, scabies. How much anyone takes depends on body weight and on the infection, which is why we dispense it on prescription.
Can we use ivermite for lice?
Head lice are not a listed use for ivermectin tablets in the US Stromectol label, or in the French and UK ivermectin tablet labels we checked. In the US, ivermectin for head lice is a 0.5% lotion put on the hair (Sklice), not a tablet. Ask a doctor about head lice treatment.
What is the best time to take ivermectin?
The US FDA label for Stromectol says to take it on an empty stomach with water. For scabies, the US CDC notes that experts advise taking it with food. The sources differ, so follow your prescriber.

DRAP registration
- Ivermite 6mg Tablet (061339), Atco Laboratories Limited. DRAP’s registry shows: Provisionally Active, “Not Verified”.
DRAP publishes no definition of this verification flag, so we can’t tell you what it means. We searched DRAP’s website for “Ivermite” and “ivermectin” on 16 October 2026 and found no alert naming Ivermite; more than ten about veterinary ivermectin injections (above). When we tested it, the search did not find a word that appears only inside an alert’s attached PDF, so an alert that names a product only in its PDF may not show up. DRAP describes its registered products index as a provisional list that “cannot be used as a reference for any purpose”. Checked against the registry on .
