What Entamizole is
Entamizole (diloxanide furoate with metronidazole, by Abbott Pakistan) is a combination medicine for amoebiasis: the WHO Model Formulary says invasive amoebiasis needs a medicine such as metronidazole followed by a luminal amoebicide such as diloxanide, to eliminate any surviving organisms in the colon, and that combined preparations are useful. We dispense it on prescription.
- Made by Abbott: DRAP’s product lookup, searched by registration number, names Abbott Laboratories (Pakistan) Limited as the company for the tablets, the DS tablets and the suspension.
- We found no Pakistani leaflet for Entamizole online, so no Pakistani document we could find states its uses, dose or condition of sale. Dispensing it on prescription is our own policy, and the clinical facts on this page come from the WHO Model Formulary and UK sources, each named where it is used.
- DRAP notifies no price for Entamizole: its price index has no Entamizole entry, and DRAP’s registry lists every pack as de-controlled with no approved price.
What is in each form, with DRAP registration
In every form the first figure is diloxanide furoate and the second is metronidazole, according to DRAP’s registry.
| Form | Ingredients | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Tablet 250 mg/200 mg (DRAP reg. 006022) | Ingredients: Diloxanide furoate; metronidazole | Amount: 250 mg; 200 mg per tablet |
| DS tablet 500 mg/400 mg (DRAP reg. 008162) | Ingredients: Diloxanide furoate; metronidazole | Amount: 500 mg; 400 mg per tablet |
| Suspension (DRAP reg. 006979) | Ingredients: Diloxanide furoate; metronidazole (as metronidazole benzoate) | Amount: 250 mg; 200 mg per 10 ml |
DRAP’s record gives the suspension’s strength per 10 ml, not per 5 ml, and its metronidazole as 320 mg of metronidazole benzoate, equivalent to 200 mg of metronidazole; so a figure of 320 mg refers to the benzoate salt, not to 320 mg of metronidazole.
The DS tablet has twice as much of each ingredient as the ordinary tablet, so a box of 15 DS tablets holds the same total amount of medicine as a box of 30 ordinary tablets. Your doctor chooses the strength.
What it is used for, and why two medicines
Amoebiasis, an infection of the gut with the parasite Entamoeba histolytica. Each ingredient has its own job.
| Ingredient | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Metronidazole | UK product information: all forms of amoebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal disease, and symptomless cyst passers), and giardiasis, among other infections. |
| Diloxanide furoate | WHO Model Formulary: amoebiasis, in symptomless carriers in non-endemic areas, and to eradicate amoebae left in the gut after treatment of invasive disease with other medicines. |
The WHO Model Formulary says symptomless carriers in non-endemic areas should be treated with a luminal amoebicide, which reduces the risk of passing the infection on and protects the patient from invasive amoebiasis, and that diloxanide is the most widely used.
How to take it
We found no Pakistani dosing for Entamizole, and the WHO Model Formulary says various dosage regimens are used in amoebiasis and giardiasis, based on local experience. The dose and course length depend on the infection and the patient’s age, so the choice belongs to your prescriber. Take it as they direct.
- No alcohol: the UK product information says no alcohol during metronidazole treatment and for at least 48 hours afterwards; the NHS says 2 days.
- With food: the WHO Model Formulary says metronidazole tablets should be swallowed whole with water, during or after a meal, and the oral suspension should be taken 1 hour before a meal.
- Longer courses: the UK product information advises regular blood tests and monitoring for nerve side effects if metronidazole is needed for more than 10 days.
- Storage: DRAP’s records say store the tablets and the suspension below 30°C, away from light.
Side effects
The WHO Model Formulary lists side effects for each ingredient.
| Ingredient | Side effects |
|---|---|
| Metronidazole (WHO) | Nausea, vomiting, an unpleasant metallic taste, furred tongue and stomach upset; rarely headache, drowsiness, dizziness and darkening of urine; nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), seizures and a fall in white blood cells with prolonged or high-dose treatment. |
| Diloxanide (WHO) | Flatulence; occasionally vomiting, itching and hives (urticaria). |
Dark urine: the UK product information for metronidazole 400mg tablets says patients should be warned that metronidazole may darken urine. Driving: it says not to drive or use machinery if drowsiness, dizziness, confusion or other such symptoms occur.
Who should not take it, or should ask a doctor first
Each line names its source.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Allergy | UK: metronidazole must not be taken with a known allergy to nitroimidazoles, metronidazole or any of the ingredients. |
| Alcohol dependence | WHO: chronic alcohol dependence is a contraindication to metronidazole. |
| Cockayne syndrome | UK: metronidazole should not be used unless the benefit outweighs the risk and no alternative is available, because of severe liver toxicity. |
Other medicines
These are some of metronidazole’s interactions in the UK product information for metronidazole 400mg tablets; the WHO Model Formulary lists none for diloxanide.
| Medicine | What the UK product information says |
|---|---|
| Disulfiram | Psychotic reactions have been reported when it was used with metronidazole. |
| Warfarin and similar anticoagulants | Their effect may be increased; prothrombin times should be monitored. |
| Lithium | Lithium may build up, with possible kidney damage; lithium should be tapered or withdrawn first. |
| Busulfan | Busulfan levels may rise, which may lead to severe toxicity. |
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Ask your doctor before taking it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | WHO: for diloxanide, defer treatment until after the first trimester. UK: metronidazole should not be given in pregnancy unless the doctor considers it essential. |
| Breastfeeding | UK: metronidazole should not be given while breastfeeding unless the doctor considers it essential. NHS: if your baby is healthy, it’s OK to take metronidazole while breastfeeding; check with a pharmacist or doctor first. WHO: for diloxanide, the manufacturer advises avoiding it while breastfeeding. |
Checking your pack is genuine
As of 28 October 2026, a search of DRAP’s website found no alert, recall or rapid alert naming Entamizole or diloxanide.
- Check that the batch number on the carton matches the one on the strip or bottle, and that the pack is sealed.
- DRAP registers Entamizole tablets in 3 strips of 10, the DS tablets in packs of 15, and the suspension in 60 ml and 90 ml bottles, all under Abbott. If a pack looks different from your last one, ask our pharmacist before taking it.
- If anything looks wrong, do not take it. Send us a photo of the carton and strip or bottle on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.
We buy only from authorised distributors, and check the batch and expiry on every item before it is packed.
Information as of 28 October 2026. DRAP publishes new alerts on dra.gov.pk.
Returns and replacements
Medicines and supplements can’t be returned once they have left our pharmacy.
- Returned medicine can never go back into saleable stock. That is a safety rule, not a commercial one.
- If an item arrives damaged or wrong, tell us on WhatsApp within 24 hours and we replace it. That is us fixing our mistake, not a return.
- Anything that arrives expired or within a month of expiry we replace or refund, your choice, with no time limit.
Frequently asked questions
What is Entamizole used for?
Entamizole combines diloxanide furoate and metronidazole for amoebiasis. The WHO Model Formulary says invasive amoebiasis needs a medicine such as metronidazole followed by a luminal amoebicide such as diloxanide, to eliminate organisms left in the colon, and that combined preparations are useful.
Is Entamizole the same as Flagyl?
No. Both contain metronidazole, but Entamizole adds diloxanide furoate, which the WHO Model Formulary describes as a luminal amoebicide for amoebae left in the gut, so it is used for amoebiasis specifically. DRAP’s price index lists Flagyl tablets and suspension as metronidazole alone, made by Hoechst Pakistan; Hoechst’s own combination, Flagyl Plus, is a different product.
Can I drink alcohol with Entamizole?
No. The UK product information for metronidazole says no alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours afterwards, because of a possible disulfiram-like reaction; the NHS says avoid alcohol for 2 days after you finish.
What are the side effects of Entamizole?
The WHO Model Formulary lists nausea, vomiting, a metallic taste and stomach upset for metronidazole, and flatulence for diloxanide. The UK product information says metronidazole may darken urine.
What is the price of Entamizole in Pakistan?
DRAP notifies no maximum price for Entamizole: its price index has no Entamizole entry, and its registry lists every pack as de-controlled. Our prices for each pack are shown above.
Can I take Entamizole in pregnancy?
Ask your doctor first. The WHO Model Formulary says to defer diloxanide treatment until after the first trimester, and the UK product information says metronidazole should not be given in pregnancy unless the doctor considers it essential.
What is the difference between Entamizole and Entamizole DS?
The DS tablet has twice as much of each ingredient: DRAP’s registry gives 500 mg diloxanide furoate and 400 mg metronidazole per DS tablet, against 250 mg and 200 mg in the ordinary tablet. Take the strength your doctor prescribes.

When we tested it, the search did not find a word that appears only inside an alert’s attached PDF, so an alert that names a product only in its PDF may not show up.
