What Iberet is
- Iberet 500 Liquid is for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia, especially with other nutritional deficiencies, according to its Pakistani carton. It contains no folic acid.
- Iberet-500 tablets are a separate product with their own DRAP registration: their carton front says “Controlled-Release Iron, Vitamin C & B-Complex”, without the words folic acid. We do not sell them.
- What “500” means: every Iberet Gradumet tablet contains 500 mg of vitamin C, according to DRAP’s registry, but we found no source that says that is what the 500 in the name stands for.
- We found no Pakistani leaflet for Iberet, and the Urdu on its bottle was not legible in any image we found, so no Pakistani document we could read states its condition of sale. We sell it without a prescription.
- DRAP notifies no price for Iberet: its registry lists every pack as De-Controlled, and its price index has no Iberet entry.

Folic acid: DRAP’s registry record for Iberet Folic-500 gives folic acid as “600mg”, but the Pakistani bottle label and Abbott’s Iberet Folic 500 leaflet for Singapore both say 800 mcg. We show the pack’s figure; DRAP’s appears to be an error.
Abbott’s Iberet Folic 500 leaflet for Singapore gives the vitamin C as ascorbic acid. The syrup is registered with DRAP as “IBERT-500 LIQ”; its carton says Iberet 500 Liquid.
How to take it
Take it as the pack or your doctor directs. Abbott’s Iberet Folic 500 leaflet for Singapore says the tablets should not be sucked, chewed or kept in the mouth, but swallowed whole with water, because of the risk of mouth ulcers and tooth discolouration.
- With or without food: the Pakistani carton says the tablet may be taken on an empty stomach; Abbott’s Iberet Folic 500 leaflet for Singapore says before or during meals, depending on how the stomach tolerates it.
- Spacing from other things: the UK prescribing information for Ferrograd Folic says oral iron should not be taken within one hour before or two hours after antacids, calcium supplements, tea, coffee, eggs, milk or milk products, wholegrain breads and cereals, or dietary fibre, because they may reduce iron absorption.
- Tetracycline antibiotics: the UK prescribing information for Ferrograd Folic says, if both are needed, take the tetracycline three hours after or two hours before the iron.
- Quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin: the UK prescribing information for Ferrograd Folic says oral iron should not be taken with or within two hours of a dose of an oral quinolone.
- Thyroid medicine: the NHS lists levothyroxine among the medicines to tell a pharmacist or doctor about before taking ferrous sulfate, and says it is a good idea to leave a gap between ferrous sulfate and any other medicine, asking a doctor or pharmacist how long.
- The empty tablet in your stool: the UK prescribing information for Ferrograd Folic explains that this kind of controlled-release tablet is an inert plastic matrix that releases the iron as it passes through the gut, and the spent matrix is finally excreted in the stools.
Who should not take it, or should check first
Ask a doctor first if any of these apply; the conditions in the first three rows are contraindications in Abbott’s Iberet Folic 500 leaflet for Singapore.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Pernicious anaemia | Abbott, Singapore: contraindicated. UK, Ferrograd Folic: folic acid may obscure the nerve signs of pernicious anaemia. |
| Repeated blood transfusions, or iron by injection | Abbott, Singapore: these contraindicate taking oral iron at the same time. |
| Allergy to any ingredient, including folic acid | Abbott, Singapore: contraindicated. |
| Haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis (iron overload) | UK, Ferrograd Folic: iron preparations are contraindicated. |
| Anaemia not yet diagnosed | Abbott, Singapore: where anaemia exists, its nature and underlying causes should be established. |
| Older people, or slow bowel transit | Abbott, Singapore: vitamin B12 levels should be checked regularly in older patients. UK, Ferrograd Folic: the tablet’s plastic matrix may be a hazard in some elderly people or others with delayed intestinal transit. |
| Children under 12 (tablets) | UK, Ferrograd Folic: not recommended for children under 12 years. The Pakistani syrup carton gives a dose for infants and children. |
Side effects, including black stools
Abbott’s Iberet Folic 500 leaflet for Singapore lists, among its stomach and gut effects, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or discomfort, vomiting blood, blackening of stools, diarrhoea, constipation and ileus.
- Dark stools: the NHS says darker than usual poo is common when taking iron and usually nothing to worry about. The UK leaflet for Ferrograd Folic says tell your doctor you take it if you have a test for blood in your stools.
- When to get help: the NHS says talk to a doctor straight away if your poo is black, tar-like or red, or has blood in or on it, or if you also feel unwell in any other way.
- Abbott’s Iberet Folic 500 leaflet for Singapore says stomach upset with the controlled-release tablet is unlikely, and if it occurs the tablet may be taken after a meal.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Its Pakistani carton says it is especially indicated throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding; ask your doctor which iron and folic acid product suits you.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | Pakistan, carton: especially indicated throughout pregnancy and lactation. NHS: iron supplements are safe to take in pregnancy, and it is important that low iron levels are treated. |
| Breastfeeding | NHS: you can usually take ferrous sulfate while breastfeeding. UK, Ferrograd Folic leaflet: folic acid is excreted in breast milk, so ask your doctor if you intend breastfeeding. |
Checking your pack is genuine
We searched DRAP’s website for alerts naming Iberet; the result is shown under DRAP registration above.
- Check the bottle and carton: the Pakistani Iberet Folic-500 carton names Abbott Laboratories (Pakistan) Ltd., Landhi, Karachi, and Reg. No. 006441, and the bottle label gives folic acid as 800 mcg. The batch and expiry should match.
- Check which product you have: Iberet Folic-500 says “Iron, Folic Acid, Vitamin C & B-Complex” on the front; Iberet-500 says “Iron, Vitamin C & B-Complex”.
- If anything looks wrong, do not use it. Send us a photo of the pack on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.
We buy only from authorised distributors, and check the batch and expiry on every item before it is packed.
Information as of 4 November 2026. DRAP publishes new alerts on dra.gov.pk.
Returns and replacements
Medicines and supplements can’t be returned once they have left our pharmacy.

- Anything that arrives expired or within a month of expiry we replace or refund, your choice, with no time limit.
Frequently asked questions
What is Iberet Folic-500 used for?
Its Pakistani carton says it is for the prevention and treatment of iron and folic acid deficiency and nutritional anaemia, especially throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is controlled-release iron with folic acid, vitamin C and B vitamins.
What does the 500 in Iberet mean?
Every Iberet Gradumet tablet contains 500 mg of vitamin C, according to DRAP’s registry, but we found no source that says that is what the 500 in the name stands for. It is not the amount of iron: each tablet has 525 mg of ferrous sulphate.
What is the difference between Iberet Folic-500 and Iberet-500?
Their carton fronts differ: Iberet Folic-500 says “Iron, Folic Acid, Vitamin C & B-Complex”, while Iberet-500 says “Iron, Vitamin C & B-Complex”. They have separate DRAP registrations. We sell Iberet Folic-500.
Is Iberet syrup the same as the tablets?
No. DRAP’s registry lists Iberet 500 Liquid with ferrous sulphate, vitamin C, B vitamins and dexpanthenol, and no folic acid, at lower strengths per 5 ml than the tablet.
Why are my stools black on Iberet?
Iron colours stools dark. The NHS says this is common and usually nothing to worry about, but talk to a doctor straight away if your poo is black, tar-like or red, or has blood in or on it, or if you also feel unwell in any other way.
How should I take Iberet tablets?
Swallow them whole with water: Abbott’s Singapore leaflet says do not suck, chew or keep them in the mouth. The UK label for a similar tablet says keep it 1 hour before or 2 hours after tea, coffee, milk, eggs and antacids.
Is Iberet safe for children?
Keep the tablets locked away: the US iron warning says accidental iron overdose is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. The UK label for a similar tablet says it is not recommended under 12. Ask a doctor before giving a child any iron.
Can I take Iberet Folic-500 in pregnancy?
Its Pakistani carton says it is especially indicated throughout pregnancy and lactation, and the NHS says iron supplements are safe in pregnancy. Your doctor decides which iron product and dose suit you.
What is the price of Iberet in Pakistan?
DRAP notifies no maximum price for Iberet: its registry lists every pack as De-Controlled and its price index has no Iberet entry. Our prices are shown above.
