What Azitma is
Azitma (azithromycin 250 mg and 500 mg tablets and 200 mg/5 ml suspension, by Sami Pharmaceuticals) is an antibiotic for bacterial infections such as sinusitis, middle-ear infection, sore throat and tonsillitis, chest infections, skin infections and uncomplicated chlamydia, according to Sami Pharmaceuticals’ product information for Azitma. It is prescription-only in Pakistan.
- Sami’s product information, linked from Sami’s own Azitma page, gives the condition of sale in its Urdu instructions: “صرف رجسٹرڈ ڈاکٹر کے نسخے کے مطابق فروخت کریں” (sell only on a registered doctor’s prescription). So we dispense it on prescription only.
- It is a macrolide antibiotic: the UK product information for azithromycin 500mg tablets groups azithromycin with the other macrolides.
- Made by Sami Pharmaceuticals in Karachi, not by Getz: DRAP’s price index lists each Azitma product it covers under SAMI Pharmaceuticals, and Sami’s product information names Sami as the manufacturer.
- DRAP controls the prices of the Azitma packs we sell: its price index sets Rs 575.83 for 6 tablets of 500 mg, effective 23 July 2026, and each of our prices is below DRAP’s figure for that pack.
The Azitma forms, side by side

What is in each form, with DRAP registration
From the label claims in DRAP’s registry. Azithromycin is present as azithromycin dihydrate.
| Form | Ingredient | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Tablet 250 mg (DRAP reg. 074899) | Ingredient: Azithromycin | Amount: 250 mg |
| Tablet 500 mg (DRAP reg. 074900) | Ingredient: Azithromycin | Amount: 500 mg |
| Suspension (DRAP reg. 074902) | Ingredient: Azithromycin | Amount: 200 mg per 5 ml |
Sami’s product information describes the 250 mg tablet as pink and capsule-shaped, engraved “SAMI” on one side, and the 500 mg tablet as light yellow to yellow and oblong, plain on both sides.
What it is used for
Bacterial infections only. The UK label lists more uses than Sami’s Pakistani product information.
| Source | Uses |
|---|---|
| Pakistan, Sami (Azitma tablets) | Acute bacterial sinusitis; acute bacterial middle-ear infection (otitis media); pharyngitis and tonsillitis; flare-ups of chronic bronchitis; community-acquired pneumonia; skin and soft tissue infections; uncomplicated chlamydia infection of the urethra or cervix. |
| UK, azithromycin 500mg tablets | Also lists early Lyme disease (erythema migrans), periodontal abscesses and periodontitis, chancroid, chlamydial prostatitis, and Mycobacterium avium complex infection in people with HIV. |
The UK product information for azithromycin 500mg tablets says azithromycin should only be started after a careful assessment of the benefits and risks, considering local resistance, and when preferred treatments are not indicated.
How to take it: a short course
Azitma is taken once a day for a few days, not for weeks: Sami Pharmaceuticals’ product information for Azitma says the tablets are taken as a single daily dose for three days or, alternatively, five days, and as a single dose for uncomplicated chlamydia. Your prescriber chooses the course; take it as they direct.
- Tablets: Sami’s product information says swallow them whole, with or without food, and that the tablets are not suitable for children weighing less than 45 kg.
- Suspension for children: Sami’s product information gives the child’s dose by body weight, once daily for 3 days, and says there is no information on children less than 6 months of age.
- Suspension, once made up: Sami’s product information says keep it at room temperature, below 30°C, use it within 5 days, and do not freeze it. Ask our pharmacist to make it up if you’re unsure how much water to add.
- Antacids: Sami’s tablet information says azithromycin and antacids should not be taken at the same time, and its suspension information says take azithromycin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after the antacid. The NHS gives the same 1-hour and 2-hour gap.
- Finish the course: the UK patient leaflet says if you stop taking it too soon, the infection may return.
Side effects
Stomach and gut effects are the most common, according to Sami Pharmaceuticals’ product information for Azitma.
| Source | Side effects |
|---|---|
| Pakistan, Sami (tablets) (very common) | Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence. |
| Pakistan, Sami (tablets) (common) | Vomiting; indigestion; dizziness; headache; pins and needles; changes in taste; deafness. |
| Serious (Pakistan, Sami) | Heart rhythm problems including torsades de pointes; severe liver inflammation; diarrhoea from Clostridium difficile, which may range from mild diarrhoea to fatal colitis. |
Driving: Sami’s product information says there is no evidence that azithromycin affects driving, but the UK product information for azithromycin 500mg tablets says it has a moderate influence, as dizziness, drowsiness and convulsions have been reported. Don’t drive if you feel dizzy.
Who should not take it, or should ask a doctor first
Each line names its source.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Allergy to macrolide antibiotics | Pakistan and UK: must not be taken with an allergy to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic. |
| Severe liver disease | Pakistan: it should not be given to patients with severe liver disease. |
| Heart rhythm problems | Pakistan and UK: caution with QT prolongation, low potassium or magnesium, a slow or irregular heartbeat, or severe heart failure. |
| Myasthenia gravis | Pakistan: worsening of myasthenia symptoms and new myasthenia syndrome have been reported. |
| Diabetes (suspension) | NHS: azithromycin liquid contains sugar. |
Other medicines
Tell your doctor about everything you take.
| Medicine | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ergotamine and other ergot medicines (migraine) | What the source says: Should not be taken together, because of the theoretical possibility of ergotism. | Source: Pakistan; UK, 4.4 |
| Warfarin | What the source says: Its blood-thinning effect may be increased; prothrombin time may need checking more often. | Source: Pakistan; UK, 4.5 |
| Digoxin | What the source says: Digoxin levels may rise; monitoring is needed during and after treatment. | Source: Pakistan; UK, 4.5 |
| Ciclosporin | What the source says: Ciclosporin levels should be monitored and its dose adjusted if needed. | Source: Pakistan; UK, 4.5 |
| Hydroxychloroquine, chloroquine | What the source says: Weigh the benefits and risks carefully, because of a possible increased risk of heart events and death. | Source: Pakistan |
| Medicines that prolong the QT interval | What the source says: Caution, because of the risk to heart rhythm. | Source: Pakistan |
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Ask your doctor before taking it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | Pakistan: should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. NHS: it is OK to take during pregnancy for an infection that needs treatment, but other antibiotics may be more suitable. |
| Breastfeeding | Pakistan: should not be used while breastfeeding unless the doctor feels the benefits justify the risks to the baby. NHS: it passes into breast milk in small amounts and is unlikely to cause side effects in breastfed babies. |
Azitma injection
Azitma is also registered as a 500 mg injection (DRAP registry entry); Sami’s product information says it is for community-acquired pneumonia and pelvic inflammatory disease where treatment must start intravenously, and should not be given as a bolus or into a muscle.
We don’t sell the injection online: it is given in a clinic or hospital.
Checking your pack is genuine
As of 28 October 2026, no DRAP alert names Azitma. DRAP’s alerts about spurious azithromycin name other brands, including Azomax, made by a different company: its rapid alert of 17 September 2025 names Azomax 500mg batch C1699, and its rapid alert of 10 September 2025 names Azomax 250mg capsules batch C3193 and Azomax 500mg tablets batch C3670.
- Check that the batch number on the carton matches the one on the strip or bottle, and that the pack is sealed.
- Check the name: Azitma is made by Sami Pharmaceuticals. Sami’s product information says the 250 mg tablet is pink and engraved “SAMI”; if a pack or tablet looks different from your last one, ask our pharmacist before taking it.
- If anything looks wrong, do not take it. Send us a photo of the carton and strip on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.
We buy only from authorised distributors, and check the batch and expiry on every item before it is packed.
Information as of 28 October 2026. DRAP publishes new alerts on dra.gov.pk.
Returns and replacements
Medicines and supplements can’t be returned once they have left our pharmacy.
- Returned medicine can never go back into saleable stock. That is a safety rule, not a commercial one.
- If an item arrives damaged or wrong, tell us on WhatsApp within 24 hours and we replace it. That is us fixing our mistake, not a return.
- Anything that arrives expired or within a month of expiry we replace or refund, your choice, with no time limit.

DRAP publishes no definition of this verification flag, so we can’t tell you what it means. We searched DRAP’s website for “Azitma”, “azithromycin” and “Azomax” on 28 October 2026 and found no alert naming Azitma; the azithromycin alerts named other brands, including Azomax (below). When we tested it, the search did not find a word that appears only inside an alert’s attached PDF, so an alert that names a product only in its PDF may not show up. DRAP describes its registered products index as a provisional list that “cannot be used as a reference for any purpose”. Checked against the registry on .
