What Dermovate is

  • It is a very potent skin steroid: GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information classes it as very potent (group IV), and lists other skin conditions that do not respond to less potent steroids among its uses.
  • Dermovate-NN is a different product: DRAP’s registry record for Dermovate NN ointment lists neomycin and nystatin with the clobetasol. We do not sell it, and nothing on this page applies to it.
  • We found no Pakistani document that states Dermovate’s condition of sale: GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information has none. Dispensing it on prescription is our own policy.
  • DRAP notifies no price for Dermovate: its price index has no Dermovate entry, and DRAP’s registry gives no price figure (its approved-price field says only “As per SRO”).

Ointment (DRAP reg. 003139)Ingredient: Clobetasol propionateAmount: 0.05% w/w

GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information says ointments are especially suited to dry, thickened or scaly patches, and creams to moist or weeping skin.

DRAP registers each form only in a 20 g tube.

What it is used for

Steroid-responsive skin conditions; the UK label limits it to short courses for the more stubborn ones.

Uses of clobetasol propionate, by source
SourceUses
Pakistan, GSK (Dermovate)Inflamed, itchy steroid-responsive skin conditions in adults, the elderly and children over 1 year: psoriasis (not widespread plaque psoriasis), stubborn (recalcitrant) dermatoses, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus, and other conditions that do not respond to less potent steroids.
UK, DermovateShort-term treatment only of the more resistant inflamed, itchy steroid-responsive skin conditions that have not responded to less potent steroids.

How to use it

Apply it thinly, once or twice a day, as your doctor directs: GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information for Dermovate says use only enough to cover the affected area, then reduce how often you use it, or change to a weaker steroid, once the skin improves.

  • Maximum: GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information says not more than 4 weeks of treatment and not more than 50 g a week. If the condition worsens or does not improve within 2 to 4 weeks, the treatment and diagnosis should be re-evaluated.
  • Face and children: GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information says limit use to only a few days; the UK product information for Dermovate says 5 days if possible, and no covering (occlusion) of the face or a child’s skin.
  • Stopping, in eczema: GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information says that for atopic dermatitis (eczema), treatment should be stopped gradually once the condition is under control, with a moisturiser continued, because stopping suddenly can bring it back.
  • Eyes: GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information says keep it out of the eyes when used on the eyelids, because repeated exposure might cause cataract and glaucoma.

As of 4 November 2026, a search of DRAP’s website found no alert, recall or rapid alert naming Dermovate or clobetasol.

  • Check the tube and carton: DRAP registers Dermovate cream and ointment only in 20 g tubes, made by GlaxoSmithKline Pakistan in Karachi; the batch and expiry should match.
  • Dermovate-NN is a different product, with neomycin and nystatin added; check which one your prescription names.
  • If anything looks wrong, do not use it. Send us a photo of the carton and tube on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.

We buy only from authorised distributors, and check the batch and expiry on every item before it is packed.

Frequently asked questions

What is Dermovate cream used for?

Dermovate is clobetasol propionate, a very potent skin steroid. GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information lists inflamed, itchy steroid-responsive conditions such as psoriasis, lichen planus and discoid lupus, and others that don’t respond to weaker steroids.

How long can I use Dermovate?

GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information says not more than 4 weeks and not more than 50 g a week, and only a few days on the face. Use it only as your doctor directs.

Can I use Dermovate on my face?

Only if your doctor says so, and briefly: GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information says the face is more prone to skin thinning and use there should be limited to only a few days. GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information also says acne, rosacea and perioral dermatitis should not be treated with it.

What are the side effects of Dermovate?

GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information lists itching and burning as common, and skin thinning and stretch marks as uncommon. Used on large areas or for long, it can suppress the body’s own steroid production.

Is Dermovate the same as Dermovate-NN?

What is the price of Dermovate in Pakistan?

DRAP notifies no maximum price for Dermovate: its price index has no Dermovate entry. Our price for the 20 g cream is shown above, and we confirm the ointment price on WhatsApp.

Can I use Dermovate in pregnancy?

Only if your doctor decides the benefit outweighs the risk. GSK Pakistan’s prescribing information says use the smallest amount for the shortest time, and while breastfeeding do not apply it to the breasts.
