What Rapicort is
Rapicort (prednisolone 5 mg tablets and 15 mg/5 ml oral solution, by Tabros Pharma) is a corticosteroid used for inflammatory and allergic conditions such as bronchial asthma, severe allergic reactions and rheumatoid arthritis, according to the UK product information for prednisolone 5mg tablets. We dispense it on prescription.
- Rapicort is a steroid, not a cough syrup: none of the sources on this page lists cough as a use, and Tabros Pharma’s own product page shows Rapicort among its corticosteroids.
- DRAP’s price index lists Rapicort under Tabros Pharma, and its registry records the 5 mg tablet as an enteric-coated tablet of prednisolone, and the 15 mg/5 ml oral solution, which DRAP’s record says is made for Tabros under contract by Hiranis Pharmaceuticals in Karachi.
- We found no Pakistani leaflet for Rapicort online, so no Pakistani document we could find states its uses or condition of sale. Dispensing it on prescription is our own policy, and the clinical facts on this page come from UK sources, each named where it is used.
- DRAP controls Rapicort’s prices: its price index sets Rs 446.50 for 100 tablets, Rs 269.84 for the 60 ml bottle and Rs 511.89 for the 120 ml bottle, effective 27 July 2026, and each of our prices is below DRAP’s figure for that pack.
The Rapicort products, side by side
DRAP registers three Rapicort products, all prednisolone; we sell the tablet and the oral solution.
| Product | What it contains | Packs DRAP registers | Sold here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapicort tablet 5 mg (DRAP reg. 005202) | What it contains: Prednisolone 5 mg in an enteric-coated tablet | Packs DRAP registers: Box of 10 strips of 10 (100 tablets) | Sold here: Yes, by the strip or the box |
| Rapicort oral solution 15 mg/5 ml (DRAP reg. 094849) | What it contains: Prednisolone 15 mg in each 5 ml | Packs DRAP registers: 60 ml and 120 ml bottles | Sold here: Yes |
| Rapicort Soluble Tablet 5 mg (DRAP reg. 137244) | What it contains: Prednisolone 5 mg, as sodium phosphate, in a soluble tablet | Packs DRAP registers: Box of 10 strips of 10 | Sold here: No |
Rapicort Soluble Tablet 5 mg is a separate product, registered by DRAP on 11 September 2026; it is not the enteric-coated tablet we sell.
What is in each form, with DRAP registration
From the label claims in DRAP’s registry.
| Form | Ingredient | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Tablet 5 mg (DRAP reg. 005202) | Ingredient: Prednisolone | Amount: 5 mg per enteric-coated tablet |
| Oral solution (DRAP reg. 094849) | Ingredient: Prednisolone | Amount: 15 mg per 5 ml |
Rapicort oral solution is three times as strong as a UK prednisolone liquid, Prednisolone Dompé, which the UK product information for Prednisolone Dompé oral solution gives as 1 mg per ml (5 mg in 5 ml), so one liquid can never be swapped for another by volume.
What it is used for
Inflammatory, allergic and immune conditions across the body. We found no Pakistani leaflet listing Rapicort’s uses, so the uses below come from UK sources.
| Source | Uses |
|---|---|
| UK, prednisolone 5mg tablets | Allergy and anaphylaxis, including bronchial asthma; respiratory disease, including asthma and spasmodic croup; rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica and systemic lupus erythematosus; disorders of the blood, gut, kidneys, eyes, skin and muscles; and immunosuppression in organ transplantation. |
| UK, Prednisolone Dompé oral solution leaflet | A variety of inflammatory diseases including severe asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, allergic reactions, severe skin conditions, and some blood disorders. |
| NHS | Conditions that cause swelling (inflammation) in the body, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). |
None of these sources lists cough as a use of prednisolone. A cough that won’t go away needs a doctor’s diagnosis, not a steroid on its own.
How to take it
The dose depends on the disorder being treated, according to the UK product information for prednisolone 5mg tablets, so the choice belongs to your prescriber. Take it as they direct.
- When: the NHS says most people take prednisolone once a day, in the morning, after breakfast.
- With food: the UK product information says the tablets should be taken with or after food.
- The liquid: the NHS says use the cup or spoon that comes with it to measure the dose. Rapicort’s oral solution has 15 mg of prednisolone in every 5 ml, so measure exactly what your doctor prescribed.
- Enteric-coated tablets: the UK product information for prednisolone 5mg tablets says enteric-coated prednisolone should be used with caution in any condition with diarrhoea or a rapid transit time, and that only non-enteric-coated tablets were advocated in Crohn’s disease. Tell your doctor if you have Crohn’s disease or frequent diarrhoea.
- Stopping: the dose is reduced gradually after longer treatment, never stopped all at once (see the warning above).
Side effects
The NHS says serious side effects are more likely with a high dose or after more than 2 weeks of treatment.
| Source | Side effects |
|---|---|
| NHS (common) | Anxiety and mood changes such as feeling irritable; wanting to eat more than usual and putting on weight; problems sleeping; headaches; feeling sick; indigestion. |
| NHS (serious) | A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis); mood changes including low mood and suicidal thoughts, or high moods; Cushing’s syndrome; adrenal insufficiency; an eye condition called central serous chorioretinopathy, with blurred vision or a dark spot in the middle of your vision. |
| UK patient leaflet | Steroids including prednisolone can cause serious mental health problems, which are common in both adults and children. |
| UK product information | Stomach and gut effects include indigestion, nausea, peptic ulcer with perforation and bleeding, and acute pancreatitis; glucocorticoids may raise blood sugar. |
If you have thoughts of harming yourself, or a mood change that worries you or your family, see a doctor straight away and don’t stop the medicine suddenly on your own.
Who should not take it, or should ask a doctor first
The UK sources don’t list exactly the same conditions, so each line names its source.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| An infection that affects the whole body | UK tablets: must not be taken with a systemic infection unless it is being treated with an anti-infective. |
| Herpes infection of the eye | UK tablets: must not be taken with ocular herpes simplex, because of possible perforation. |
| Tuberculosis, peptic ulcer or psychosis | UK oral solution (Dompé): contraindicated; the UK tablet label lists them as reasons for caution and close monitoring instead. |
| Live vaccines | UK tablets: live vaccines should not be given to people on high doses of corticosteroids, and should be postponed until at least 3 months after stopping. |
| Diabetes, heart failure, epilepsy, or past mental health problems | NHS: prednisolone may not be suitable if you have diabetes or a family history of it, heart failure or a recent heart attack, epilepsy, or have ever had problems with your mental health. |
Other medicines
Tell your doctor about everything you take, including painkillers bought without a prescription.
| Medicine | What the source says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Aspirin, ibuprofen and other NSAID painkillers | What the source says: Increased risk of bleeding in the gut or ulcers. | Source: UK patient leaflet |
| Insulin and diabetes tablets | What the source says: Glucocorticoids may raise blood sugar, so people with diabetes may need their treatment adjusted. | Source: UK, 4.5 |
| Warfarin; erythromycin and rifampicin | What the source says: Named by the NHS among medicines that may not mix well with prednisolone. | Source: NHS |
| Liquorice | What the source says: The NHS says do not eat real liquorice or foods that have liquorice in them. | Source: NHS |
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking Rapicort.
| Who | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy | NHS: prednisolone can be used during pregnancy if needed; it has occasionally been linked to problems in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and may affect the baby’s growth. UK tablets: corticosteroids should only be prescribed when the benefits to mother and child outweigh the risks. |
| Breastfeeding | NHS: prednisolone can be taken while breastfeeding, but check with a doctor first. UK tablets: at high maternal doses, the baby should be monitored for adrenal suppression. |
Driving: the NHS says prednisolone will not usually affect your ability to drive, but the UK patient leaflet says not to drive or use machinery if you feel dizzy or tired after taking it.
Checking your pack is genuine
As of 28 October 2026, a search of DRAP’s website found no alert, recall or rapid alert naming Rapicort or prednisolone.
- Check that the batch number on the carton matches the one on the strip or bottle, and that the pack is sealed.
- DRAP registers Rapicort tablets only in a box of 10 strips of 10, and the oral solution in 60 ml and 120 ml bottles, all under Tabros Pharma. If a pack looks different from your last one, ask our pharmacist before taking it.
- If anything looks wrong, do not take it. Send us a photo of the carton and strip or bottle on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.
We buy only from authorised distributors, and check the batch and expiry on every item before it is packed.
Information as of 28 October 2026. DRAP publishes new alerts on dra.gov.pk.
Returns and replacements
Medicines and supplements can’t be returned once they have left our pharmacy.
- Returned medicine can never go back into saleable stock. That is a safety rule, not a commercial one.
- If an item arrives damaged or wrong, tell us on WhatsApp within 24 hours and we replace it. That is us fixing our mistake, not a return.
- Anything that arrives expired or within a month of expiry we replace or refund, your choice, with no time limit.

No. DRAP’s registry records every Rapicort product as prednisolone, and its price index lists all of them under Tabros Pharma; none contains deflazacort.
How should I take Rapicort?

The NHS lists common side effects of prednisolone as anxiety and mood changes, eating more and putting on weight, problems sleeping, headaches, feeling sick and indigestion. The UK patient leaflet says steroids can cause serious mental health problems.
