What Duphaston is

  • Made for Abbott by Highnoon: DRAP’s registry record lists Duphaston under Abbott Laboratories (Pakistan) Limited, made under contract by Highnoon Laboratories in Lahore, so Highnoon’s name on a genuine pack is expected.
  • We found no Pakistani document that states Duphaston’s condition of sale: the leaflet attached to DRAP’s record has been deleted from DRAP’s server, and the prescribing information has no condition of sale. Dispensing it on prescription is our own policy.
  • DRAP notifies no price for Duphaston: its registry lists the 20-tablet pack as De-Controlled, and its price index has no Duphaston entry.
  • We also sell Primolut N (norethisterone), a different medicine.

What is in it, with DRAP registration

ProductIngredientAmount
Duphaston tablets (DRAP reg. 006654)Ingredient: DydrogesteroneAmount: 10 mg per film-coated tablet

DRAP registers one pack only: 20 tablets, in two blister strips of 10. We sell a single strip of 10 from that pack.

The Pakistani prescribing information says the tablets contain lactose: people with galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine.

What it is used for, Pakistan compared with Ireland and the UK

The Pakistani prescribing information lists miscarriage and IVF uses that the Irish and UK labels do not.

Uses of dydrogesterone 10 mg, by source
SourceUses
Pakistan, DuphastonProgesterone deficiency: painful periods (dysmenorrhoea), endometriosis, absent periods (secondary amenorrhoea), irregular cycles, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, premenstrual syndrome, threatened miscarriage, habitual (repeated) miscarriage, infertility due to luteal insufficiency, and luteal support in assisted reproduction (IVF). Also HRT: to counteract the effect of estrogen on the womb lining in women with an intact uterus.
Ireland, DuphastonPainful periods, endometriosis, infertility, irregular cycles and premenstrual syndrome; with an estrogen for dysfunctional bleeding or secondary amenorrhoea, and in HRT. No miscarriage use.
UK, NalveePainful periods, endometriosis, irregular cycles and premenstrual syndrome; with an estrogen for dysfunctional bleeding or secondary amenorrhoea; and HRT. No miscarriage, infertility or IVF use.
Netherlands, DuphastonLists threatened and repeated miscarriage due to progesterone deficiency, and luteal support in IVF, among its uses.

How it is taken: the course depends on the use

The Pakistani prescribing information (SmPC) for Duphaston on DRAP’s website gives a different schedule and length of treatment for each use, and says they may be adapted to the severity and the response. Which one applies is your prescriber’s decision.

  • The schedules differ between cycle problems (painful periods, endometriosis, irregular cycles, bleeding, absent periods, premenstrual syndrome), threatened miscarriage, habitual miscarriage, infertility, IVF luteal support and HRT.
  • “Day 5 to day 25 of the menstrual cycle” is the schedule the Pakistani prescribing information gives for painful periods and endometriosis only. It is not the miscarriage schedule: never take Duphaston in pregnancy on a cycle schedule you have read elsewhere.
  • IVF: the Pakistani prescribing information says luteal support should be stopped once a miscarriage is diagnosed.
  • Before periods start: the Pakistani prescribing information says there is no relevant use of dydrogesterone before the first period (menarche).

Who must not take it, or should check first

The first four rows are contraindications in the Pakistani prescribing information (SmPC) for Duphaston on DRAP’s website; the rest need supervision, interact with other medicines, or show where the UK label goes further.

Who should not take dydrogesterone, or should check first, by source
WhoWhat the sources say
Known or suspected progestogen-dependent tumoursPakistan: contraindicated.
Meningioma, now or in the pastPakistan: contraindicated; if a meningioma is diagnosed, any dydrogesterone treatment must be stopped.
Vaginal bleeding without a diagnosisPakistan: contraindicated.
Allergy to dydrogesterone or the tablet’s ingredientsPakistan: contraindicated.
Porphyria, depression, or abnormal liver tests from liver diseasePakistan: close supervision, because these may recur or worsen, and stopping should be considered.
Severe liver disease, liver tumours, or blood clotsUK, Nalvee: contraindicated (severe acute and chronic liver disease, previous or existing liver tumours, thrombophlebitis and thromboembolic disease). The Pakistani label lists liver disease only for supervision.
Epilepsy, TB or HIV medicines, St John’s wortPakistan: anticonvulsants such as phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepine, rifampicin, rifabutin, nevirapine, efavirenz and St John’s wort may speed up its breakdown and reduce its effect.

Used in HRT: stroke, clots and breast cancer

When Duphaston is used with an estrogen as HRT, the Pakistani prescribing information (SmPC) for Duphaston on DRAP’s website carries the HRT warnings below.

HRT risks, from the Pakistani prescribing information for Duphaston
RiskWhat it says
StrokeCombined estrogen-progestogen and estrogen-only HRT are associated with an up to 1.5-fold increase in the risk of ischaemic stroke, and the overall risk rises with age.
Blood clots (VTE)HRT is associated with a 1.3- to 3-fold risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, more likely in the first year; if a clot develops, the drug should be stopped.
Breast cancerAn increased risk with combined HRT that becomes apparent after about 3 years, and may persist for 10 years or more after more than 5 years of use.
ReviewHRT should only be started for symptoms that affect quality of life, with the risks and benefits reviewed at least once a year.

Side effects

The most commonly reported, according to the Pakistani prescribing information (SmPC) for Duphaston on DRAP’s website, are vaginal bleeding, migraine or headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, period problems and breast pain or tenderness.

  • Driving: the Pakistani prescribing information says it may infrequently cause mild sleepiness or dizziness, especially in the first few hours after a dose, so take care when driving or using machines.
  • Also listed in the Pakistani prescribing information: depressed mood, allergic reactions including angioedema, abnormal liver function, swelling (oedema), weight gain, haemolytic anaemia, and growth of progestogen-dependent tumours such as meningioma.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The Pakistani and UK labels disagree on pregnancy; both are shown.

Dydrogesterone in pregnancy and breastfeeding, by source
WhoWhat the sources say
PregnancyPakistan: more than 10 million pregnancies are estimated to have been exposed, with no indication of harm so far; dydrogesterone can be used during pregnancy if clearly indicated. UK, Nalvee: not authorised for use in pregnancy.
BreastfeedingPakistan: whether there is a risk to the baby is not known, so it should not be used while breastfeeding.

Checking your pack is genuine

DRAP has named the spurious Duphaston batches below. Highnoon Laboratories is Duphaston’s genuine contract manufacturer, so its name on a pack does not by itself show a pack is fake or genuine.

  • Check the batch number on the strip and carton against the batches below. Do not use any of them.
  • Check the tablet: the Pakistani prescribing information (SmPC) for Duphaston on DRAP’s website describes it as white, round and biconvex, plain on one side, with “155” on each side of the score line on the other.
  • Check the pack: DRAP registers 20 tablets in two blister strips of 10, for Abbott Laboratories (Pakistan) Limited.
  • If anything looks wrong, do not use it. Send us a photo of the carton and strip on WhatsApp, and report it to DRAP.

Frequently asked questions

What is Duphaston used for?

Duphaston is dydrogesterone, a progestogen. The Pakistani prescribing information lists conditions caused by too little progesterone, including painful or irregular periods, endometriosis, threatened and repeated miscarriage, infertility, IVF luteal support, and HRT.

Is Duphaston used to prevent miscarriage?

The Pakistani prescribing information lists threatened and habitual miscarriage among its uses; the Irish and UK labels do not. Whether it suits your pregnancy, and the course, is your doctor’s decision.

Which days should I take Duphaston?

It depends on why it is prescribed. The Pakistani prescribing information gives a different schedule for each use; “day 5 to 25” is the one for painful periods and endometriosis, not for miscarriage. Follow your prescription.

Can Duphaston be taken in pregnancy?

The Pakistani prescribing information says it can be used during pregnancy if clearly indicated. The UK prescribing information for Nalvee, a dydrogesterone tablet, says it is not authorised for use in pregnancy. Take it in pregnancy only on your doctor’s prescription.

What is the difference between Duphaston and Primolut N?

They are different medicines: DRAP’s registry lists Duphaston as dydrogesterone 10mg and Primolut N as norethisterone 5mg. Don’t swap one for the other without your doctor.

How can I tell if Duphaston is fake?

DRAP has declared batches 223298, 230092, 230672, 233493 and 241476 spurious. The Pakistani prescribing information describes a white round tablet with “155” on each side of the score line. Buy only from a licensed pharmacy.

What are the side effects of Duphaston?

The Pakistani prescribing information lists vaginal bleeding, migraine or headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, period problems and breast pain or tenderness as the most commonly reported.

What is the price of Duphaston in Pakistan?

DRAP notifies no maximum price: its registry lists Duphaston as De-Controlled and its price index has no Duphaston entry. Our price for a strip of 10 is shown above.

  • Duphaston 10mg Tablets (006654), Abbott Laboratories (Pakistan) Limited. DRAP’s registry shows: Provisionally Active, “Not Verified”.

DRAP publishes no definition of this verification flag, so we can’t tell you what it means. We searched DRAP’s website for “Duphaston”, “dydrogesterone” and “223298” on 4 November 2026 and found six alerts naming spurious batches of Duphaston (under “Checking your pack is genuine”). When we tested it, the search did not find a word that appears only inside an alert’s attached PDF, so an alert that names a product only in its PDF may not show up. DRAP describes its registered products index as a provisional list that “cannot be used as a reference for any purpose”. Checked against the registry on .
